Little Women and Tiny Dancers

The High School Theatre Class at work is doing Little Women the Musical this Saturday.

Did you know there was a musical of Little Women? Yeah, the book by Louisa May Alcott. About the March sisters? They made a musical about it.

I sat through my first (kind of) rehearsal today. It wasn't a full rehearsal. It was mostly skipping around, running the things they needed to work on.

My opinion of it? It wouldn't be so bad if they called it "A Musical Based Loosely on a Story About a Strong Willed Young Woman Kind of Like Jo March and her Sisters." And didn't set it during the Civil War. Or changed the music so that it fit in the Civil War Era. The music is ... wrong. Cute, if you like that sort of thing. But a bit to modern.

I'll see a full run (I hope) tomorrow, because, evidently I am to go to their rehearsal at the Middle School tomorrow instead of my usual office hours at the studio. I am not complaining about this. I may even be running lights and sound. And by running, I mean designing. With one run through. And a dress rehearsal.

That leaves Saturday morning at the studio to get all of my first of the month stuff done (payroll and whatnot) and then rush from the studio to the Middle School for the dress rehearsal and performance.

Sunday, there is a mid-afternoon performance for the 3,4 and 5 year old dancers. I'm not sure who is running lights and sound for that one. With my luck, I'll walk in and discover I am. I have been told, however, I am checking in dancers and helping to sell tickets.

It is going to be a long weekend.

Random Thoughts

I worked at a summer theatre in Hampton, NH a number of years ago.
Part of my job one year was to direct the kids' camp. We did a show
involving a variety of Cinderella stories from around the world.
The Russian Cinderella has Baba Yaga as the evil witch. For those of
you who don't know, Baba Yaga flies around in a house that walks (when
it isn't flying) on chicken legs.
Someone had found a big cardboard box for us to make Baba Yaga's house
out of. One of my interns, Jo, would sit in it during her breaks and
be a box of Jo. Like a cup of Jo. Only better.

Piled Higher & Deeper

I dragged my infected self out to campus last night with The Boy™ to go see Jorge Cham speak. If you have no idea who I am talking about, Jorge Cham is the author of PHD Comics and Lord, is the man funny. The comic is probably funnier if you are or know a grad student.

The lecture last night was essentially about procrastination. Which is, to paraphrase Jorge (and I hope I'm paraphrasing with the correct intent,) what you are doing when you are doing what you want to be doing. Or something like that.

Anyway, go check out the comic. It's funny. Waste time reading the archives if you want. You won't be sorry. Or maybe you will. If you are, don't blame it on me.

In other, totally unrelated news, I went back to the doctor yesterday afternoon. I still have this blasted sinus infection. The antibiotics he put me on last week did absolutely nothing other than give me migraines and a yeast infection. Lucky me. So he switched me to a different antibiotic and something else which, in his words, will cure nothing but will help alleviate the symptoms and give me some energy.
And boy, does it. I feel like I'm on crack or something. My ears still hurt like hell, but I have a ton of energy.
In the two hours since I've been home from work, I have cleaned the kitchen (including sweeping and mopping the floor,) picked up the living room, sorted all the mail that piled up last week while I was sick (including shredding all the junk,) cleaned the bathroom and cleaned the balcony doors. I stood in the office and looked at the filing cabinet and the basket of "Things To Be Filed" that is absolutely overflowing, but ... I just don't have it in me. I think I need The Boy™'s help with that project.

I might knit instead. I'm about half done with the second of the I Dream of Africa Socks (yes, this pair has taken me forever.) I got the heel started last night at the lecture and then went ahead and picked up all the stitches to start onto the foot before realizing that I didn't actually turn the heal. Idiot. So I have to go back and drop all those stitches and find my heel stitches again and .... sigh. It will take some time.

This is, I think, the most comprehensive blog post I've done in quite some time. These meds are nice!

Still Sick

I was doing okay for about a day. But I seem to have taken a turn for the worse. I am having a lot of ear pain right now. They feel all swollen on the inside. It isn't pleasant. And the antibiotics aren't much fun. I take one and feel kind of pukey for about half an hour. About two hours later, I get a wicked migraine. Then I get to do it again at dinner time.

I called in sick on Wednesday, mostly because of the general congestion and yuckiness. Yesterday, I kind of felt okay and made it through the day. Today I felt pretty crappy, but thought I could get through my shift (4-9pm on Fridays.) I got to work and BossWoman took one look at me and told me to go home. I didn't need to be asked twice. I crashed for a bit and then called BossMan and told him I won't be going in tomorrow either.

So, I'm curling up on the couch this weekend with my book, my knitting, my laptop, lots of hot tea, hot soup and Darvocet to ward off the migraines caused by the anitbiotics. I'll nap a lot, watch some TV and hopefully be back to work on Monday.

Test

Trying to post from the iPod Touch.

Sick

I stayed home sick today.

I probably could have gone into work (shhh ... don't tell BossMan,) but I think it did me some good to stay home and take it easy. I feel so much better having done so. I could use another day or so of it. These six day work weeks are pretty draining. The 14 day work weeks even more so.
February has been a rough month, work wise. First there has been the extra hours due to the orchestra concert (okay, so that was the end of January, but it was close enough to February to count as this month,) and the music recitals. And then all the extra hours the past two weeks when BossMan and BossWoman were out of town and we were all covering for them. Coming up next weekend will be even more extra hours for dance and theatre performances. We're all getting sick from burn-out.

Aside from February just being a hard month in general. You want so bad for winter to be almost over, but February is really just the middle of it all. It's a short month, but it feels like the longest because it doesn't have the benefit of having a holiday at all (at least for those of us who don't get Presidents' Day or February Break.) January has the end of Christmas and New Year's and March has Spring Break. February has nothing.

It's back to work for me tomorrow. I'm going to try to take it easy. Well, as easy as I can. Drink lots of water. Take my vitamins (in addition to the antibiotics I'll be taking for another week.) I'm hoping to feel well enough to hit the gym after work. At least for a little bit. Maybe that will help me get my energy back.

Oh, and another good thing about being back on the insurance? I can finally fill my prescriptions and start taking my migraine meds again.

More Good and Bad

Good News: I went to the doctor yesterday.
Bad News: They had to draw blood.
Good News: My blood is fine.
Bad News: The fatigue is therefore a result of the birth control implant and there's really nothing I can do about it (except take the implant out, which I'm not going to do at this point.)

Good News: I went to the doctor yesterday.
Bad News: I have a sinus infection.
Good News: I have antibiotics which are covered by the insurance.

Bad News (or good, depending on how you look at it) : I let the doctor talk me into getting a flu shot.
Good News: I won't be getting the flu, nor will I be spreading it to other people.
Bad News: My arms hurts.
Good News (or bad, depending on how you look at it) : Not that badly, I'm just being a baby.

Good News: BossMan and BossWoman are back from Texas.
Good News: This means less overtime for me.
Um ... there's very little bad news about this.

Other, totally unrelated news: The Boy and I went to see Coraline 3D on Sunday with Margot and the boys. I very highly recommend seeing it if you haven't done so already. It is fantastic.

Dancin' in the Streets!

Well, not literally. 'Cause I don't dance. But figuratively. Why? you might ask. Because we have received some good news today. Finally.

Good News Number 1: I am, in fact, on the insurance. I don't know if I blogged here about the never ending stress and confusion relating to our health insurance and renewal thereof. Well, when The Boy put me on the insurance in January, we thought it hadn't gone through because that was for new students/employees only. Of which, The Boy is not. However, we found out today that it did work and I have been on the insurance since January first.
Now I can go to the doctor and ask about this pain in my ears instead of waiting until September and hoping it doesn't kill me.

Good News Number 2: We found out a few months ago that The Boy's department had lost its funding for grad students for next year. This put quite some stress on us since, even at 40 hours a week, I do not make enough money for us to live on. But, The Boy has been given funding for next year through a different, related department. So we don't have to move away and have him (not) finish his dissertation elsewhere.

It's been a good day.

Money Saving Ideas

We all know the economy is in the dumps. The Boy and I aren't doing too badly, but it doesn't hurt to save money while we can. We're not doing a great job putting money into savings right now, and we're pretty much living paycheck to paycheck. Which is kind of a scary thing to have to do. So, I've been thinking of ways to save some money.

1. We're thinking of moving. Not a huge move. Just into a smaller, cheaper place. Probably out of the complex we're in now. The apartment we're in wasn't bad when we first moved in. Rent was under $700 a month. Then it went over $700; as of August, it is over $800. The place is definitely not worth $800+ a month. We're looking for somewhere that is back into the $6-700 range.

2. I'm thinking of canceling my gym membership. Not a great idea when I'm trying (as usual) to lose weight, I know. But I don't go nearly enough to justify the $36 a month membership fee at the YMCA. Plus, if we move, it won't be right down the street like it is now. I know I'll never go then.
I've been having pretty good success with some pilates DVDs I've been using, plus the Wii Fit (as much as a workout as that is.) Once the weather warms up a bit more, I can get outside for walks and bike rides, too.
I have also been getting exercise DVDs from Netflix, too. That's kind of fun. If I get one I like, I can keep it until I'm bored with it. If I get one that sucks, I just send it back right away.

3. I discovered in January (with the tiny paycheck that I got from December) that it isn't too hard for us to make do on a small paycheck. So for the next couple of months (while I'm getting more hours and The Boy still gets his stipend,) I'm going to put money into savings right away. This month, I was able to put in $100 right off the bat. Next month, I hope to put in more, since I've been working a lot of extra hours this month.

4. The small grocery store isn't that bad. We do not have to shop at Wegman's every week. We spend far more money at Wegman's that we ought to. There is just so much more to chose from!

So, there are four ways we can start saving money. Aside from things like turning off the lights, turning down the heat, making lunch instead of buying and making coffee instead of buying. Things we do anyway.
Do you have any ideas on how to save extra money.

There are three little girls in front of me right now, all playing Mario on their pink DSes. All wearing black leotards and pink tights.

Cute.

Observation

There's a little old man at the gym who comes in to work out dressed like he's going to work. He wears neatly pressed slacks, a button down shirt and suspenders. He looks so professional, calmly doing his leg presses, next to the rest of us sweating, grunting slobs.

Nice Day

First off, congratulations to Amber and John. Amber gave birth to a healthy baby girl at 12:30 this afternoon. Finally!

In other news ... The Boy™ and I had a nice day today. It turned out warm(ish) and sunny. So, we took the bus downtown. Wandered around campus for a bit, stopped at the libraries (public and University,) went to Uncle Eli's for art supplies and presents, then came home. I'm relaxing for a bit with my knitting and Mythbusters and will make pizza later.

No, I don't plan on watching the Super Bowl.
